Tips & Tricks
Good quality vodka
For any vodka cocktail with few ingredients, use a good quality vodka.
Ice
Did you know that ice is an integral ingredient in cocktails? It helps combine all of the flavors and should never be skipped!
Fresh Lemons
Fresh lemons help make this vodka spiked lemonade extra lemony. I muddle lemon wedges in this cocktail. You can use fresh lemon juice instead.
Homemade Lemonade
You can substitute for premade lemonade. Premade lemonade will result in a sweeter vodka cocktail. This causes hangovers and should be avoided at all cost! I use fresh lemons to avoid the overtly sugary taste.
Ingredients and Substitutions
SPARKLING LEMON FLAVORED WATER. This adds a fizzy, lighter lemon flavor to this spiked lemonade. For a less strong lemon flavor, try unflavored sparkling water. Or swap for your favorite flavored sparkling water!
LEMON VODKA. I used lemon flavored vodka. This enhances the lemon flavor of this spiked lemonade. Substitute for unflavored vodka if you can’t find lemon-flavored.
SUGAR. Turbinado sugar helps balance out the tartness of the kiwi and lemon flavors. Substitute for simple syrup.
GREEN KIWI. The kiwi adds a fresh tropical taste to this vodka lemonade. I chop green kiwis into small chunks. Then I smash them with the sugar. Swap for strawberries to make a strawberry vodka lemonade or pink vodka lemonade.
FRESH LEMON WEDGES. Fresh lemon wedges take this drink to the next level! While you can use pre-made lemonade, it will be more sugary and sweet.
What vodka goes well with lemonade?
For this spiked sparkling lemonade, I used a lemon vodka. You can use any kind of flavored vodka or unflavored vodka.
I used Western Son Lemon-flavored Vodka in this kiwi lemonade cocktail. It is so delicious I could drink it by itself .. It’s a great gluten-free vodka option and made in Texas!
How to cut a kiwi
When I first saw a kiwi, I thought to myself how the heck do I cut this?! It’s fuzzy and hairy!
Fun fact! You CAN actually eat the skins of a kiwi fruit!
If you do want to cut a kiwi (optional but helpful in a kiwi smash cocktail), there are only a few steps.
First, cut off both of the ends of the kiwi.
Next, place the kiwi sitting upright on one of the flat edges.
Then take your knife downwards along the skin. I like to cut in a hexagonal shape, cutting down in six swipes.
Variations on Vodka Lemonade
- Spiked Limeade. Use lime sparkling water instead of lemon!
- Spiked Pink Lemonade. Add a splash of grenadine or muddle fresh strawberries with the kiwis.
- Gin Lemonade. Swap vodka for gin.
- Bourbon Lemonade. Swap vodka for your favorite bourbon.
