Best Juicers
If you’re like me, you’re tired of spending $15+ on a juice that you feel you could make yourself. I finally bit the bullet on a juicer for Christmas and it was the best kitchen investment I've made! If you haven’t already bit the bullet and bought a juicer of your own, I’ll help you with a little guidance.
There are three main types of juicers:
- Centrifugal Juicer (affiliate link) ($50+)
- Masticating Juicer ($200+)
- Twin-Gear or Triturating Juicer ($400+)
There are many differences, but the best summary is:
- Centrifugal Juicer (affiliate link) - best for beginners, least expensive, noisiest, not as great with leafy greens, juice lasts only a few hours, juice can result in a more foamy and separated juice.
- Masticating Juicer - for families and juice-lovers as it's more of an investment, makes some noise, fine with leafy greens, good at separating juice from pulp, less foam, juice lasts 36-72 hours.
- Twin-Gear or Triturating Juicer - for the hard-core obsessed and a big investment, makes little noise, harder to clean, great with leafy greens, great at separating juice from pulp, little foam, juice lasts 36-72 hours.
If you want the full run-down of the differences, Healthy Kitchen 101 has a great article that helped inform me when I was shopping, on the types of juicers. Or for more tips on finding the right juicer for you.
TL;DR : The best juicer is the one that fits your budget and needs.
If you want my exact juicer (which I LOVE), you can find the Nutribullet Juicer Pro Centrifugal Juicer on Amazon. It’s extremely easy to clean, comes with ice cubes to store leftover juice in the freezer, and mini bottles for carrying your juice on the go. I highly recommend it, especially for those starting out!
To Peel or Not to Peel
You don’t NEED to peel the skin off of fruits for juicing. In fact, for most fruits, the bulk of the nutrients are in the skins. Therefore keeping the skins is great. However there are two kinds of ingredients that should be peeled: hard skins and citrus.
Hard Skins
If using fruits with hard or inedible skins, such as mangoes, guava, melons, or pineapple, always peel before juicing.
I also like to cube pineapple and melons to make them easier to juice in the chute.
Citrus
However, I find for citrus, it is always better to remove skins. This makes it easier for your juicer to do it’s thing. Also, the skins of citrus are typically much more bitter and juice tastes much better without it.
FUN FACT! Peels of fruit and vegetables can hold a large percentage of nutrients such as fiber, antioxidants, calcium, potassium, etc.
Description of Juices
These eight juices are perfect for adding a bit of energy back to your life, or for enjoying juice in general. You’ll find these eight juicing recipes are perfect for every level of juice-maker and to accommodate all taste buds! The best ingredients for naturally boosting energy include: apples, citrus, and leafy greens - and a combination of some or all will be found in these recipes.
Green Machine - With spinach, cucumber, green apple and a hint of ginger lemon, this is your traditional green juice recipe but with a sour and earthy taste.
Pineapple Spinach Ginger - Although this is a green juice, because of the pineapple, it doesn’t taste like it! It’s a tart green juice and is my personal favorite.
Watermelon Kiwi Lime - A fruity, sweeter juice recipe that combines fresh watermelon cubes with kiwis. It ends with a light, zesty punch of lime.
Carrot Apple Zinger - This popular juice recipe is more of a savory juice. With apples, carrots, and a lemon-ginger zing at the end, this is a fun way to get your fruits and veggies in juice form.
Tropi-Kale - Kale, fresh pineapple and orange make this leafy green juice with a sweeter, tropical twist!
Apple-Berry - A blend of red and green apples combined with fresh raspberries, this is a super berry-forward, tart apple juice type of drink. Perfect for kids (and adults!)!
Apple-Citrus - A great juice for beginning juicers that’s light and sweet thanks to a combo of green apples, grapefruit, orange and ginger.
Kiwi Green Apple Spinach - Apples, spinach and kiwis mixed together for a lighter green juice with a sweeter taste. This juice is best for those who want to try out green juices, and those who love green drinks of all kinds.
Tips & Tricks
- Make sure to go from lowest speed to highest speed when using the juicer. Different fruits and veggies have a different variation of pulp, seeds and other factors. The different speeds help take that into consideration to separate the pulp and seeds from the juice, making for a cleaner and better juice.
- Wash the fruits and vegetables thoroughly. Wash prior to peeling or cutting. This makes sure that bacteria doesn’t get into your delicious juices. For more tips, follow the FDA’s guide to properly washing produce.
- When adding greens into juices, depending on the juicer recipe, try to intersperse greens with other juicing ingredients. This helps make sure the smaller greens get juiced.
- Cut larger fruits and vegetables into smaller pieces that can easily fit into the chute of your juicer. I like to quarter apples, half any citrus and quarter cucumbers. Pineapples and watermelon I cut into cubes.
How to Store Homemade Juice
Fresh juice is best when consumed immediately or within a few hours. I prefer to let my juice get slightly cold in the fridge for 30-minutes before drinking.
If you need to store the juice for later, drink it within 72 hours, but most recommended in the first 24 hours.
Freezing Juice
If you won’t finish the juice within the recommended 24-72 hours, you can freeze any leftovers. Freeze fresh juice in an ice cube maker. When frozen into cubes, remove from the ice cube mold and place in an airtight ziplock or freezer bag.
Frozen juice lasts 2-3 months.
