    What is agua de fresa?

Agua de fresa, or strawberry agua fresca, is a type of agua fresca made with fresh strawberries. An agua fresca is a refreshing beverage made from fruit, water, and sometimes a sweetener. This delicious strawberry agua fresca is simply made from strawberries, water, and a sweetener.

    Why this recipe works

    This recipe is:

    • Made with only 3 ingredients
    • Easy
    • Ready in 10 minutes
    • Vegan
    • Gluten free
    • Dairy free

    Ingredient notes

Ingredients needed for agua de fresa: water, strawberries, and sweetener.

Strawberries - Fresh ripe strawberries are best for this recipe, but you can also use frozen strawberries. Strawberries are in season in late spring through early summer, but are usually available all year round in grocery stores. If it's not peak season in your area, then frozen strawberries may be a better option.

Sweetener - Traditional aguas frescas use granulated sugar as sweetener. As a substitute I typically use honey, agave nectar or maple syrup for healthier options. You can also use coconut sugar, granulated sugar, or monk fruit sweetener! Note that all sweeteners have a slightly different taste and therefore will change the taste of the agua fresca slightly. If your strawberries are especially naturally sweet, you may not even need to use sweetener at all!

See the recipe card below for a full list of ingredients and measurements.

    Instructions

This strawberry agua fresca is easy to make. It’s as simple as blending, straining, and serving.

Blend strawberries, sweetener, and 4 cups of water together in a high-powered blender, until smooth.

Drink immediately or store in the refrigerator for 2-4 hours before serving over ice.

    Variations

    • Add in other fresh fruits like kiwi, mango, or pineapple.
    • Top with fresh mint.
    • Add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.
    • Add a splash of milk for an agua de fresa con leche.
    • Swap out the fresh water for coconut water to add coconut flavor.
    • This is a perfect non-alcoholic drink, but you can add light rum, vodka, or tequila to make it a refreshing cocktail.

    Expert Tips

To remove the stem or not: You don’t need to remove the stems of the strawberries prior to blending. It does, however, make the process a little easier for straining.

Storage directions: Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, but this drink is best served fresh. If you won’t use it all in the next few days, you can pour it into ice cube trays and freeze for a few months. Once frozen, transfer the cubes to an airtight container.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How to make agua de fresa with milk?

Another version of agua de fresa contains milk. To make agua de fresa con leche, add condensed milk, evaporated milk, or regular milk to the strawberry agua fresca.

    Can I use frozen strawberries?

Yes, you can use frozen strawberries to make agua de fresa. Allow the strawberries to thaw before blending, or it will be more smoothie like in texture.
